Polyoxymethylene (POM) which is also known as acetal or polyacetal, is a highly crystalline engineering resin. The two types of commercially available POM include homopolymers and copolymers. Copolymers such as Celanese AMCEL®, CELCON®, HOSTAFORM® and KEPITAL® are prepared by copolymerizing trioxane with a cyclic ether to form a polymer chain of oxymethylene and oxyethylene. In general, copolymers have a wider processing window, are more thermally stable, and have better hot water and alkaline resistance than homopolymers. Homopolymers have slightly higher mechanical properties and higher melting point compared to copolymers.

AMCEL®, CELCON®, HOSTAFORM® and KEPITAL® POM are highly crystalline polymers offering high strength, high stiffness, good creep resistance, good fatigue resistance, good chemical resistance, excellent friction & wear properties, and easy processability.

Typical applications for POM include gears, bearings, pulleys, irrigation components, toys, kitchen utensils, appliances, conveyor belts, fuel filter bodies, fasteners and clips, plumbing components, automotive window lift components, seat belt components, speaker grilles, nozzles, valves, electric razor components, dishwasher components, and medical components.

POM can be processed by most standard thermoplastic processing methods including injection molding, blow molding, sheet and profile extrusion, and roto-molding.

Celanese offers one of the largest product portfolios of Acetal Copolymers (POM), which includes AMCEL®, CELCON®, HOSTAFORM® and KEPITAL® products. This POM product line spans a wide range of products including UV and weather resistant grades. These weather resistance grades find use in applications such as automotive, home window treatments, and lawn sprinkler components where they involve prolonged exposure to UV light and the environment. Standard, uncolored POM grades are not recommended for these applications as they can experience loss in mechanical properties, color shift, and loss of gloss. Because of this, UV and weather resistance grades of POM were developed. These products are available in natural, black and colors. UV stabilized grades of POM in natural color are used for interior applications, such as drapery hardware, where a natural color is desired. Weather resistant black grades are recommended for use where maximum UV stability is needed in outdoor applications. Pre-colored grades of Celanese POM are recommended for interior applications such as interior automotive parts, general industrial and home use that are exposed to filtered light.

Celanese UV weatherable POM products are used in interior automotive components such as speaker grilles, hooks, buttons, brackets, trunk and fuel tank cover release levers, and seat belt components. Outdoor industrial and consumer applications such as lawn sprinkler heads and irrigation components, hot tub hardware, roofing fasteners, boat trim and brackets and lock housings. Indoor consumer applications include drapery hardware, window blind components, and drapery rods.
