BASF ecovio® Compostable Polymers

Looking for a bio-based polymer? Let the experts at Entec Polymers help you find your sustainable solution. BASF ecovio® is one of many bio-based polymers that Entec has to offer. ecovio® is based on polylactic acid (PLA) which is derived from corn making it more resistant to mechanical stress and moisture compared to some other starch-based bioplastics.

ecovio® is produced from PLA and ecoflex®, a biodegradable copolyester. ecovio® is compostable and offers a renewable content of 10% to 85% depending on the specific grade. ecovio® offers a large range of properties with grades similar to low density polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. ecovio® can be processed by most methods including blown and cast film, injection molding, blow molding and extrusion and thermoforming.

Major applications for ecovio® include films, foams, paper coatings and injection and blow molded items. Common film applications include organic waste bags, food packaging, produce bags, compostable shopping bags, mulch film and produce labels. Paper coating applications include folding cartons, coffee cups and disposable hot dog serving dishes. Injection molded applications include food cutlery, thin rigid packaging and single serve coffee pods, blow molded bottles and extruded straws are other common applications.
